The youth football tournament held in Bartella brought together eight teams from across Al-Hamdaniya District, including squads from Bartella itself, Qaraqosh, Karamlesh, and Bashiqa, in a week-long competition held on the town’s renovated municipal sports field. The tournament was organized in response to growing demand from local youth for structured recreational activities, particularly given the limited extracurricular options available to teenagers and young adults in the area since the disruptions of past years. Matches were scheduled across evenings to accommodate players who work or attend school during the day, with floodlights installed temporarily to allow games to continue after sunset. Each team consisted of players aged 14 to 22, and matches were officiated by volunteer referees trained briefly beforehand on standard rules and conflict-resolution procedures to keep the competitive atmosphere positive and respectful. Beyond the matches themselves, the event included a health and nutrition booth run by a local clinic, offering basic health checks and advice on sports-related injury prevention, as well as a small vendor area where local food stalls sold refreshments, with proceeds partly directed toward purchasing new sports equipment for the town’s youth center. The final match, held on the last evening of the tournament, drew a large crowd of families and community members, turning into something of a town-wide social event with music and informal celebrations following the closing ceremony. Trophies, medals, and small cash prizes were awarded to the top three teams, while every participant received a certificate of participation. Organizers noted that the tournament not only provided a constructive outlet for youth energy but also brought together young people from different religious and ethnic backgrounds within the district, reinforcing social cohesion through shared sport. Plans are already underway to expand the tournament format next year to include a girls’ division.
